Your work

Commercial buildings in Australia will double their greenhouse gas emissions by 2010, to 70 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, unless we take action now.

ClimateSmart workplaces

The Brisbane skyline from the Kangaroo Point cliffsBeing ClimateSmart starts at home, but the story doesn’t end there.

In every workplace there are opportunities to save energy, resources and raw materials and reduce waste. We can all make suggestions or changes that deliver smarter or more efficient ways to produce products or operate a smarter business.

There are some easy ways to make a difference:

  • Install energy-efficient lighting, including daylight or movement sensors
  • Check for, and fix, water leaks: taps, pipes, hoses and tanks
  • Install water-saving devices and water-recovery systems, like dual-flush toilets and 3 Star-rated taps and showerheads
  • Make sure only stormwater flows into stormwater drains, both on and off the site
  • Establish or improve recycling facilities for manufacturing and office waste
  • Ensure transport services and delivery vehicles are used efficiently
  • Clean-up and manage chemical storage areas
  • Encourage your workplace to reward environmental innovation and employee suggestions
  • Find out what other companies are doing that your company could consider doing too. A visit to the EPA’s ecoBiz site is good place to start
