- Rainwater tanks—Department of Local Government, Planning, Sport and Recreation
With current water restrictions, particularly in south-east Queensland, many residents are choosing to install rainwater tanks. The cost of these tanks can be reduced through rebates available from the Queensland Government and your local council. You should also check with your local council if any health, building or planning regulations apply.
What sort of tank do I need?
Tanks come in all shapes and sizes, and can fit in to a small space. They are usually made of metal, concrete, polythene or fibreglass. They can be placed above ground, on a stand, under the house or even incorporated into fences and walls.
The cost of an average size tank is around $1000, plus additional costs for the pump and installation, however most of this cost will be refunded through rebates.
Tank size will depend on:
- Local rainfall patterns
- Roof catchment area
- Number of people in your house.
As a general rule, a 3000-litre tank is recommended for external uses, and a minimum of 5000 litres for toilet flushing and laundry.
All tanks need to be installed by a licensed plumber.
