Cool it by Degrees Day
If every household in Queensland changed their fridge temperature setting from 3°C to 4°C, the savings in greenhouse gas emissions would be the same as taking 11,000 cars off the road.
Friday, 16 November is ‘Cool it by Degrees Day’. It’s time to check your fridge to make sure it isn’t over-chilled.
Your fridge is one of the biggest energy users in your home.
Typically, your fridge accounts for about 15 percent of your household electricity bill, and a one degree change can improve its running efficiency by up to five percent.
By setting your fridge to 4˚C you will save energy and money, while keeping your food cool and safe.
And there are other ways to get the most out of your fridge.
Test your door seals to make sure they are working properly – just insert a piece of paper as you shut the door, and if you can easily slide the paper out it is time to replace your seals.
Make sure you leave a gap of at least 5cm between your fridge and the walls. And if you have two fridges, check both! The good old beer fridge is an often forgotten culprit for consuming electricity.
Around 2.4 million beer fridges are used nation wide, which is equivalent to the emissions produced by 1.7 millions cars.
Pledge today and set your fridge temperature to 4˚C on 16 November
