Green power

More information

More than 1200 Queensland homes are now being powered by the first electricity generator in the world to be fuelled by waste macadamia nut shells.

Green power

Energy production through wind powerGreen power is a voluntary scheme that enables consumers to support renewable energy by making a small extra payment with their electricity bill.

Buying green power (electricity generated from renewable energy sources) is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting renewable energy projects.

Renewable energy comes from sources such as the sun, wind, wave, water, geothermal and organic matter. Generating energy from these sources reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reduces impacts on the environment.

Renewable sources of energy already account for about 12 per cent of Queensland's total energy usage, and generate around four per cent of Queensland's electricity.

To ensure that consumers can be sure that they always get the green power they pay for, the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy represents Queensland on the National Green Power Accreditation Program.

A supplier’s view

Ergon Energy is a supplier of green power to Queensland consumers, more than 44,000 of whom have already opted to support the program.
