A modern home entertainment areaThe energy used by the appliances in your lounge room can generate large amounts of greenhouse gas each year.

It is not only big appliances like TVs that use a lot of power.  Video recorders, DVD players and video game systems all contribute to your home’s energy consumption.

Your appliances may also be using power when they’re not in use.

Many appliances have a standby mode which uses electricity to power the clock and other features. This costs you money and wastes energy.

How to make your lounge room appliances as efficient as possible

  • Turn off TVs, DVD players, stereos, computer game systems and other appliances at the wall rather than leaving them in standby mode.
  • Remember to turn off your TV when no one is watching it.
  • Use plug-in timers and time switches on your appliances, allowing you to automatically turn on and off heaters, fans and lights.
  • Purchase products labelled with Energy Star.  Energy Star is an international standard for energy-efficient electronic equipment. Products with Energy Star reduce the amount of energy they consume by automatically switching into a ‘sleep’ mode when not being used and/or reducing the amount power used when in standby mode.

When buying new appliances, look for products that consume less energy. To find out what the power consumption of TV and other appliances, check with your retailer or manufacturer.
