Green Energy

The world’s first electricity generator fuelled by waste macadamia nut shells is powering more than 1200 Queensland homes.

Thursday Island wind farmBuying green energy is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions.

Green energy is electricity generated from renewable sources such as wind, sun, water, waves, geothermal heat and organic matter.  Generating energy from these sources reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reduces impacts on the environment.

By buying accredited GreenPower, you are supporting renewable energy projects.

The switch to green energy has already started.  Renewable sources of energy currently account for about 12 percent of Queensland's total energy usage, and generate around four percent of Queensland's electricity.

How to switch to green energy

To purchase accredited GreenPower, simply call a GreenPower retailer.

By adding a small extra charge on your electricity bill, your energy retailer purchases renewable energy on your behalf.  This “green” energy is distributed to your home through the electricity grid.

Depending on your retailer, you can choose the amount of electricity you receive from renewable sources.  With GreenPower available for 10 percent to 100 percent of your power bill, you can choose an option to suit your budget.

See the contact details for accredited GreenPower retailers for homes in Queensland.

Can I be sure it’s green energy?

The Queensland Department of Mines and Energy represents Queensland on the National GreenPower Accreditation Program to ensure consumers receive “green” energy from a genuine renewable source.
